PNG first in Pacific for US to support power deal

Papua New Guinea is the first country in the Pacific that the US Government has raised its hand to
support in terms of energy.
USAID deputy mission director for Pacific and Mongolia Sean Callahan said since their establishments
there were no big investments such as this commitment made during the recent APEC leaders summit.
He said it is great that this partnership is happening now because the US government has done work
with electrification in other countries.
“What comes to mind now is called power Africa which is a piece of legislation where USAID was given
authority to go out and make the deal happen where we will link up private investors as well to actually
build and provide electricity and power to various African nations,’’ he said.
‘‘It is quite impressive in terms of bringing the private sector and the power authorities in Africa together
to actually commit to having x number of megawatts done in the future.’’
Mr Callahan said it is important for PNG as well and PNG Power Limited (PPL) has played such a big
role with electricity and power in general.
He said they are looking at how they can work with PPL.
“Yes they are better at their job and I have to give them credit, I think they are ambitious, they are very
open, they are engaging and they want to see this happen,’’ he said.
So it’s not an issue of a power authority not being open here or being much disengaged and they are
very engaged and I think that is one of the take away I got from the last two days here that PPL is very
open and to not just seeking help but want to help them improve everything here.’’
