Rabaul port road needs urgent repair
By PORENI UMAU
The Rabaul port road in East New Britain needs urgent repair.
This was the call by the Rabaul Community and Business Council Incorporated (RCBCI), during a meeting yesterday at the Rabaul Hotel to expose the neglect that Rabaul town continues to suffer from without nil government support.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill was invitedbut was represented by Gazelle MP and Police Minister Jelta Wong along with ENB Governor Nakikus Konga.
Co-chair for the RCBCI, Susie McGrade said that the Rabaul port road was the point of call where thousands of tourists disembarked and the condition of the road was likened to that of Lake Kutubu like craters on the road.
She said that the road shouldered the weight of almost 17,000 containers a year with almost 350 containers a week which has caused consequential damage to the road network in Rabaul. She said that this has hindered further development.
Ms McGrade said that apart from the feeder roads and the main link to Kokopo, the roads were at times impassable and dangerous to travel on.
She said that Rabaul was the permanent home to this formidable port. She reiterated the words of PNG Ports Corporation ‘the port is the gateway to success’ citing that Rabaul port has always been the reason for Rabaul’s success.
She said that Rabaul town plays host to 90 per cent of the international fishing fleets and was the portal of all imports and exports from East New Britain and the New Guinea Islands. She said that cruise ships dock in Rabaul almost every month bringing in over 1000 tourists per month.
One of the largest cruise ships in the world, the Queen Elizabeth II would call in next week Monday.
She said that Rabaul has become a victim of its own success.
