The 2018 year was littered with key agricultural projects announcements and successful delivery as the agricultural sector stood out amidst a tough economic backdrop.
Agriculture Minister Mr Benny Allan stated projects achieved over the year through submissions and stakeholders initiatives to partner with the State in a diversified range of projects representing a good cross-section of the sector.
“We have the Sepik Plains project that KAL (Kumul Agriculture Limited) signed an agreement with the Israelis IAI (Innovative Agro Industries). The project is already happening in the Sepik Plains.
“We also have just recently cabinet approved Baiyer Rice and Stock feed project, worth about K65 million.
“Cabinet also has given approval in principle for a sugar project called a Sugar Cocoland project in Abau.
“We have Yalu dairy that is in the process, cabinet submission. We also have the vegetable farms in Surinki Enga and the existing Central Dairy in 14 Mile and we also have the Rice project up at Markham on a small scale,” Minister Allan said.
He a lot of interest continues to pour in towards the agriculture sector.
“The one at PAU is a rice project it is just a demonstration farm to bring farmers to come out there and train them, and also give them seeds as a seed bank.
“It is a venture with Philippines Government, Agriculture Department and PAU (Pacific Adventist University). Government has approved K8 million for that project.
He added with the support of stakeholders like Kumul Agriculture Limited, the K100 million equity fund will be channeled by the state SOE for government to have direct partnership equity for current and future projects.
“The K31 million equity PNG’s contribution towards the Baiyer project rice and stock feed was invested through KAL. “It is an important stakeholder which we and the department are working very closely with KAL.”He said during APEC the government achieved two major signings.Beginning with rice with the Philippines and the Juncao farming technology signing that uses new technology with the Chinese government for Chinese aid. “So that we will be using new technology and we will be doing a lot of awareness and workshops that will be held to bring in stakeholders.
