Aussies, Kiwis in gold medal playoff
BASKETBALL: THE Australians and New Zealanders are the favorites to face-off in tomorrow’s FIBA U15 Oceania championship gold play-off in the men’s group at the Taurama Aquatic & Indoor complex in Port Moresby.
The visitors dominated and made their presence felt in the opening three days of competition including having face-off with each other in their different pool games (men and women). In the women’s division Samoa are keen to prove the inevitable against the Aussies and Kiwis if they underestimate their determination to surge upfront in offensive plays.
New Zealand gave a marginal win (131-41) against Guam on day one followed by another 163-51 win against host PNG and 105-27 win over Fiji on day two.
Yesterday’s 3pm match again saw New Zealand victorious, escaping with a two-point win (59-57) over the Australians.
Match top performers for Australia was Michael Walker with 10 points, eight rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal while for New Zealand was Joshua Book on 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.
For the Aussies, they too stamped their mark with opening wins against Samoa (90-49) and against Fiji (119-27) Guam (113-30) on day two.
