Desperate couple open their wallets to save themselves
A desperate Chinese couple at the centre of an attack on a Lae media person are opening their wallets to anyone who can have their case discontinued.
The couple who attacked EMTV reporter Julie Badui Owa at Kamkumung on Christmas Eve have offered Owa money to drop the case, endeared their lawyer to pester Owa with an out of court settlement and has gone as far as trying curry the policeman handling the case.
Mrs Owa last night said the couple Shu Ding Wu, a mother of two, and her husband Ming Zheng allegedly offered her money at the police station to drop the case of assault and insult she has instituted against them when she went to report the matter.
Last night, she said a lawyer (named) from a Lae based law firm representing the pair had called her numerous times offering that her clients are willing to pay Badui Owa a hefty sum and even double the amount if she discontinues the case.
But Mrs Owai remained firm last night saying she will continue with her prosecution to show that foreigners cannot just come into our country and try to bend the rules to favour them in any circumstance.
What further angered Mrs Owa was when a senior police officer at the Lae Metro office approached her and told her to drop the cases for a fee to celebrate Christmas.
On December 24, Mrs Owa was with her children and her mum inside a shop operated by the duo at Lae’s Kamkumung suburb when she noticed a man smoking.
She was punched by the man and further insulted by the female after approaching the man to tell him to stop smoking inside the shop as it posed a health risk to others including her little children.
Both were arrested on Christmas Day and taken to the Lae Met police station and charged with assault (Ming Zheng) and insult (Shu Ding Wu).
Mrs Owa said she was contacted by their lawyer with an offer of monetary compensation to settle out of court.
Meanwhile, the honest policeman handling the case, in a FB post claimed he had received a call from an Asian woman asking if ‘he needed anything’ which he rejected.
All eyes are now on how fast the case will go to the next level.
