Papua New Guinea and Port Moresby residents can expect more rain in the coming days.
That’s the good news from the National Weather Service director Samuel Maiha who said that NCD is now starting to receive some of the expected monsoonal rain, which is expected to continue for the next week or so. Yesterday, only 8.2mm of rainfall was recorded, but in coming days and possibly over the week, they expect a little bit more,” Mr Maiha said.
He also said that coastal provinces should take precautionary measures as PNG braces for changes in weather conditions. Strong northwest surge of 25 knots to 34 knots were expected to continue which could cause rough seas and high waves, thus all small craft and boats are advised to take necessary precaution before and after going out to sea.
Mr Maiha said that strong winds caused by change in the weather patterns may pose a risk for sea travellers in PNG’s coastal areas.
“People from all coastal areas of Papua New Guinea are reminded that the country is now into its northwest monsoon season where from time to time the winds from the northwest towards the southeast may increase posing risk of sea accidents to mariners. People should take care whilst at sea,” he said.
“We are going into the thick of the monsoonal season where and when northwest winds will begin to be flowing increasing occasionally towards 25 knots to 34 knots often warranting strong wind warnings to safeguard especially the small boats and ships to be cautious while at sea.”
Mr Maiha also confirmed the recent developments of winds owing to tropical cyclone Owen that had formed in Australia’s Gulf of Carpentaria and moved southeast towards north Queensland.
“Definitely the surging of the northwester winds towards tropical cyclone Owen. When tropical cyclones form over north Queensland, winds surge towards those systems and tend to increase in strength posing risk to small boats, especially over the south coast from Daru to eastern Milne Bay.”
The National Weather Service will be monitoring the state of the sea and may issue strong wind warnings should the situation be warranted, he said.
