Supporters rally against vote recount in Lae

Kundiwa, the capital of Chimbu Province, has been tense since Christmas after supporters of Governor Michael Dua rallied against Lae as the venue for a recount.
The supporters of Mr Dua prevented PNG Electoral Commission officials and police who were trying to move shipping containers containing the ballot papers of the 2017 National Election from the Kundiawa police station to Lae, Morobe Province, for the recount on Monday.
Chimbu police commander Superintendent Jacob Singura said yesterday that Mr Dua’s supporters stopped the police and Electoral Commission officials who were trying to move the container to Lae.
“The supporters have been monitoring the container inside the police station during Christmas and Boxing Day,” the PPC said, adding that they were rowdy on Monday but no damages were done to business houses and public properties.
Supt Singura said the supporters want the recount to take place in Kundiawa and not outside the province, in defiance of a court order that the recount must take place in Lae.
He said the police are monitoring the situation while the concerns of the supporters are being looked at by appropriate officials.
The recount of the Chimbu Provincial seat had been ordered after former governor Noah Kool succeeded in his election petition case seeking a recount. Mr Singura said apart from the recount-related disturbances, Chimbu experienced a peaceful Christmas and Boxing Day yesterday. He said that the police were continuing their Christmas and New Year operations and warned people to stay out of trouble.
