FUNERAL planning (haus krai) is becoming another commercial activity in the Highlands region, costing the relatives of the deceased thousands of kina during the mourning period.

Port Moresby-based businessman Joe Mok, who was in Mount Hagen to attend the funeral of his wife Angelyn Mok, said many people who had contributed towards the funeral were not genuine but had expected double the amount they gave in return in future.

Mr Mok said helping other people during the time of mourning was a cultural practice where relatives, friends and families contributed money, pigs and food to help the family in grief.

“This practice (contribution towards funeral) has been part of our lives going back to our ancestors days, and today it is seen as a commercial activity that people give with an expectation to make a profit,” he said.

“Some friends and relatives contribute with a genuine heart, but many give with high expectation and this practice must be condemned and stopped.

“I had been involved in this practice and it has cost me tens of thousands of kina.

“Now with the death of my wife Angelyn, I condemn this practise and I will not entertain such practise in the future.

“I could have saved these thousands of kina to do something useful or invest for my children’s future, but I spend it with the people trying to repay with interest what they had given to me during my time of need.

“As a leader of Western Highlands and Papua New Guinea, I strongly condemn the practice of contribution towards haus krai and it must stop.

“It’s the second day (Wednesday) of 2019 and I promise not to entertain this practise in future,” Mr Mok said.

Another businessman, Nixon Koi said he had collected thousands of kina during haus krai (funeral) and it had cost him two or three times more to repay what he had received.

“I have made my decision to quit giving or receiving money at the haus krai, and today I have learned that what I have spent at the funerals over many years is a total waste of my savings.”
