IT has now taken that Police Commissioner Gari Baki himself to insist on the evasive and infamous convicted criminal Tommy Baker to unconditionally surrender or face serious consequences.

Although not specific on what tough actions the police will take if he refuses to give himself up, latest police actions indicate they are not taking chances against his gang who have displayed a no-surrender attitude and would instead take them on using high powered firearms.

Mr Baki has insisted on Baker’s peaceful surrendering together with his second in command Michael “Mekere” Yawi and other gang members to police.

“I want to echo the comments by the Milne Bay Provincial Police Commander that a greater support is needed by the community in ensuring the remaining gang members need to surrender and come out before finding themselves seriously injured in the event there is a confrontation with the police,” he said.

“No harm will come to Baker and his gang members if they surrender now.”

Mr Baki has also said any criminal activities outside of Milne Bay will not be tolerated by police.
“We don’t want the Alotau incident to be projected for our own people to be involved in criminal activities, as much as being involved in criminal activities the last thing you don’t want is people being killed,” he said.

“Anyone trying to involve themselves should refrain at all cost and you can see what happened down at Koki Fish market and Alotau.

“It’s going to be situation where the public begins to get up in arms and rebel against this type of situations and for the police it’s the last thing I would encourage.

“When it comes to police when their lives are threatened they are faced with defending themselves.”
The numbers of the Baker/Mekere gang have dwindled with three members shot dead, 11 apprehended and two more injured including Baker.

Mr Baki confirmed that a trail of blood after the firefight on Tuesday morning could see more members of the gang injured.

“From the police they believe a couple of those have been injured, we are following a trail of blood.”

It is believed that the few members with Baker a wanted escapee charged with murder (awaiting his second court appearance) and “Mekere” who is considered dangerous.

However, operations conducted are still ongoing in Alotau with the police continuing their hunt for the gang members.

“However it is relatively quiet in the town of Alotau,” Mr Baki confirmed.

Police confirmed that they were speaking to the wife of “Mekere”.

On the ground, police maintain a presence in the town area.
