Alotau 11 in jail, more charges to follow
BY MICHAEL ARNOLD
The eleven associates of the notorious fugitive Tommy Baker previously held in police custody have now been transferred to the Bomana jail after they were arraigned with holding charges yesterday.
During their arraignment hearing yesterday presiding magistrate, Cosmas Bidar confirmed police intentions to slap further charges on the 11 as soon as investigations confirm their exact involvement in the crime spree on January 23.
Of the 11, six suspects Judah Yawie, Boaz Izod, Asigau Jack Rakatani, Kelly Haoda, Clive David Apabo and Percy Modudula, were arraigned on one count each of conspiring with Tommy Baker, Michael “Mekere” Yawie and others to commit crimes under section 515 of the Criminal Code Act.
The six have not been officially charged for their alleged involvement in the willful murder of Milne Bay provincial government legal officer, Michael Efi, the burning of eight police houses, and the armed robbery of Boboana Supermarket and the Alotau International Hotel, or the theft of four motor vehicles in the same evening.
The remaining five suspects Tony Binas, Joseph Yahuna, Ronald Cosmas, Nathan Wapar and Marcellin Wapar have only been arraigned for allegedly harbouring members of the Baker gang between January 23 and February 10 this year as well as accessory after the fact.
Police reports indicated that the five men were also allegedly found in possession of three shotguns, a pistol (all factory-made) as well as more than 24-rounds of cartridges and a stolen generator.
As indicated in the police hand-up brief, the initial charges were intended mainly to hold the suspects in remand in order buy time for police to complete their investigations into the case.
All 11 suspects have had their cases adjourned to April 8, when they would be appearing in court again for mention.
