A man who is facing charges of attempted murder and escaping lawful custody has now told the court that he had simply stepped out to buy betelnuts for the police officers but was mistakenly arrested for attempting to escape.
According to the police file, Joe Joseph was said to have attempted to escape police custody at Hohola police station after he was arrested for the attempted murder of a man at Burns Peak.
However, during his mention hearing yesterday, the accused told Senior Magistrate Cosmas Bidar that he had been mistakenly charged with escaping police custody.
According to the accused, he had been removed from the station holding cells by the duty officers who had then sent him out to buy them betelnut during which time he was arrested and charged with attempting to escape.
The accused was unable to support this account of his short-lived escape with any evidence however, and the court had ordered his continued remand in Bomana jail until he either makes an application for bail or his case reached a conclusion.
Joseph’s co-accused Sipi Boy had also been reported as having escaped police custody although there had been no reports of how he might have managed to escape.
The matter had been stood over to Friday for submissions.
