Government to undertake new projects in 2019: PM
YEAR 2019 will be better but challenging as Government rolls out key infrastructure, brings on-stream new resource projects and faces the LLG election and Bougainville referendum, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said in his opening speech at the 2019 Leaders Summit in Port Moresby yesterday.
Mr O’Neill said the country has seen off a number of challenges, but also had made a number of achievements.
He said the country went through savage drought and destructive tropical storms and the Highlands earthquake last year, all made worse by global warming.
“From this destruction, we have made our voice louder in the global community seeking real action so that we can protect future generations,” Mr O’Neill said.
He said PNG is now seeing the results of many of the initiatives out of APEC, including the US$1.6 billion power project that will transform the country.
“We are already engaging with the districts and the provinces, making sure that 70 per cent of our population must have access to power by the year 2030.”
In the communication sector, Mr O’Neill said in the coming months accesses could be opened up to undersea cabling through the ports in Lae, Port Moresby, Alotau and Madang.
“It will enable communication for our citizens at a much lower cost and much faster rate, enabling them to do more business and students to study.”
PM O’Neill said power and communication was key to growth in any community including the economy.
“Over the next few months we will be announcing the conclusion of the project with TOTAL for our second LNG project, and of course Wafi-Golpu. And in doing this we are making sure that all of the stakeholders receive more benefits than ever before.”
He said government is looking at optimising the State revenue to making sure there is stable cash flow, in ensuring the country does not go through the boom-and-bust cycle of the past.
“This is certainly a different approach from previous resource developments in our country. We appreciate the genuineness of many of the investors who are in these negotiations, and there will be no surprise later on.”
Mr O’Neill also touched on two significant events that would happen this year, the LLG elections and the Bougainville referendum.
“We need to deliver the local level government council elections next month and the Bougainville Referendum in October. I can assure you that our government is committed to making sure that this referendum takes place.”
The final outcome of the referendum would need to be put to Parliament for its decision.
