O’Neill hails first day of summit a great success
PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill yesterday commended districts, some of which remote, and three provinces that presented their achievements, challenges but, most of all, highlighted the major changes that have taken place in their districts and provinces.
More than 10 districts, some of which include Telefomin, Maprik, Kikori, Usino Bundi and Ungai Bena and three provinces gave their presentations yesterday, singling out their achievements and challenges, but most of all highlighted the major changes that have taken place in their districts and provinces compared to 10 years ago, as the first day of the three- day Summit successfully ended.
Host PM O’Neill and Deputy Prime Minister Charles Abel sat in right through with Ministers and governors and MPs, including district administrators, departmental heads and many state owned enterprise bosses.
Ungai Bena brought in their disabled team to show the Summit their achievements, especially mastering sign language.
Mr O’Neill gave his first day closing speech and talked about the unique ways the remote districts were proudly addressing their achievements, amid difficulties and how their DSIP and PSIP has transformed their districts and provinces.
“Our aim as government is that we must make sure that we have minimum standards, we must make sure that we bring everyone together right across the country and that is why it is important that we work together,” Mr O’Neill said.
“Today’s discussions showed that where there is partnerships in provinces and districts, you can see a lot more happening in that district or in that province.
“And of course there are some unique challenges as we saw in Telefomin, where delivery of services costs more than delivery of services where we have got road links and we got access to shipping and other transportation,” he said.
“We need to balance all these, where there is geographical challenges and where there is more and more population.
“I think as government it is time now that we review the way we distribute some of our resources.”
