Dei tribes work together to rebuild rundown bridge
BY RIODAN BEGUSHAR
LOCALS in the Dei district of Western Highlands are helping themselves rather than wait for their MP to come to their aid.
They are working together to rebuild the rundown Youngen bridge over the Yangen river at the border of Komba Yangen village of the Rolgake tribe and the Ramdi tribe.
A locally owned sawmill was hired and timber sawn was used to patch the bridge last Saturday.
Councillor Robin Wamonge said the bridge had deteriorated and had hindered PMV service forcing mothers to carry bags of garden food and walk from the Miktimb village to Paglum or Mugalamp station to catch bus.
“We cannot wait or expect the government for services which can be done by ourselves. Youngen bridge is an important bridge that connects Komba to Miktimb village, (and) the situation for sometimes had affected our mothers transporting their bags of foods and veggies,” Mr Wamoge said.
He said he is thankful of the cooperation of his young men in the community.
“My boys had listened to me to fix the bridge, also the community members had made contribution to hire a sawmill to cut timbers and for the nails,” the councillor said.
He thanked the Member for Dei Wesley Nukundi for his funding in building the Monga bridge which sits at the border of Mul-Baiyer and Dei district connecting the two districts.
“Our MP had bought materials last year for a complete new bridge, and we understand the MP has his own timing to do his work but in the meantime we had rebuilt the bridge with sawn timber so that PMVs can complete the route,” he said.
The councilor added that expecting government to always provide is not a helpful mindset for the benefit of the community.
“We can organise ourselves and develop our own communities, like fixing roads, bridges and others. We have our hands, we need to come together and organize ourselves as people of one community, for at the end of the day, we ourselves will benefit from it,” Wamoge said.
