Hunters punished with 24-0 thrashing
RUGBY LEAGUE:
THE Hunters started the day on the back-foot when winger Gairo Kapana fumbled the first ball from a towering kick-off by Clifford.
The error including missed tackles on the Hunters 10m red zone that also contributed to its consequences that saw the visitors scoring their first try through winger Mathew Musumeci on the far left edge within two minutes.
Four minutes later, the Hunters were punished again – this time a poor defensive effort saw an unmarked William Bugden heading to the tryline following a quick dummy half play by hooker Connor Jones.
Hunters had several opportunities at hand but their halves combination of Charlie Simon and William Mone who are still trying to work out a combination, continued to struggle to steer their attack.
Errors in ball handling, defensive sets and off-sides resulted in the visitors claiming four penalties while the home side had six in open half.
The visitors had the last say in the opening half with a 31st minute try to centre Shawn Bowen as Clifford stamped his mark in making it 3/3 conversions for an 18-0 lead at halftime.
The Hunters have failed for the second time in their five-year participation in the Intrust Super Cup to post any points at half-time.
The Hunters were more determined in the second half and were persistent in scoring points but were continuously denied by the visitors on several occasions. The Pride withstood the Hunters’ attack causing into ball handling errors which they continued to capitalize on.
The latter saw Pride fullback Jack Murphy crossing over on the far right edge of Hunters tryline in the 54th minute. Clifford missed the conversion but managed to extend their lead with a successful penalty conversion.
Tries scored Northern Pride 24 (Mathew Musumeci, William Bugden, Shawn Bowen, Jack Murphy. Jack Clifford 3/4 conversions, 1 successful penalty) defeated SP PNG Hunters 0.
In the curtain raiser match, which is also the Digicel Cup trial match Gulf Isou beat Central Dabaris 18-12.
Hunters will host their second home game on Sunday (March 24) against Melbourne Storm feeder club Sunshine Coast Falcons.
