Momis hits hard at national government

Autonomous Bougainville Government President John Momis has hit hard again at the national government last Friday to honour its funding commitment to the referendum process.
Mr Momis in his opening remarks at the joint supervisory body meeting in Port Moresby said the national government should release money for referendum, adding that this was one of the delays causing the postponing of the referendum date to October 12.
But Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said that the government has committed K10 million which was already released, and another K10 million will be released this month with other funding arrangements now being worked on.
The Bougainville Referendum Commission under the chairmanship of Bertie Ahern said that they required K54 million that was approved by both governments in 2017 and last year.
The JSB had approved the release of K22 million by March 11 (next Monday) based on the cash flow provided.
The meeting was updated on referendum preparations and its funding capacities. It was noted that work to prepare for the referendum has continued, but that continued capacity constraints and funding issues were impacting on the ability of the BRC to progress critical issues.
The implications of funding issues were acknowledged, and it was noted that K10 million has now been made available to the BRC head trust account for immediate use, and a further K10 million is expected to be released next week.
Mr O’Neill said the national government would find K10 million to be paid later this year.
