Notre Dame tributes pioneering nuns
The Notre Dame girls secondary school at Kumdi in the Western Highlands province has commended the four pioneer Notre Dame sisters for playing a vital role in the early days to educate young women.
The four nuns, including Sr Mary Alexia, Sr Mary Claver, Sr Mary Marisa and Sr Mary Magdelida, arrived in Banz, Jiwaka province, in 1961.
Their mission was to train and educate young women.
The nuns were commended at the the school’s golden jubilee anniversary service held at the school chapel on Monday.
Sister Regina Marie Wamp commended the four nuns on behalf of the school, while thanking the surrounding communities for giving the land on which the school is built to God.
Sr Marie Wamp, the daughter of Sir Wamp Wan, who invited the Catholic church to settle at Rebiamul, is one of the first nationals to join the sisters of Notre Dame.
“All the pioneer missionaries, including the four nuns, came to PNG with faith, love, commitment and contributed to develop the Notre Dame Secondary School,” she said.
“Promoting women’s integrity to serve globally is is cornerstone of our school heritage.”
