PNG delegation to observe Solomon Islands national general elections
PAPUA New Guinea’s former diplomat and senior civil servant Leonard Louma is among a high-powered five-member delegation from the Melanesian Spearhead Group that will observe the National General Elections in the Solomon Islands next month.
Solomon Islands is going into elections on April 3. The Solomon Islands Government early this year invited the MSG countries to have observers during elections next month.
MSG had finalised its observer team which would be headed by retired diplomat and politician Ratu Inoke Kabuabola of Fiji and supported by Mr Martin Tete (chairman of the Electoral Commission of Vanuatu), Mr Leonard Louma (PNG) and Mr Rodrique Tiavouane, of the FLNKS in New Caledonia). These highly respected individuals would be supported by the MSG Secretariat support team.
The election observation program is part of the secretariat’s work under the political and security affairs programme since 2014 with the first MSG multi-national observer group dispatched to observe the elections in Fiji in September 2014.
Since 2014, the MSG – Observer Group had successfully observed subsequent elections of member countries. These include observing the Vanuatu snap elections in January 2016, the Papua New Guinea National Election in July 2017, and the Fiji National Election in November 2018. In November 2018, an MSG Observer Group also participated in the New Caledonia referendum.
The MSG director general, Amena Yauvoli while welcoming the observer team alluded to past MSG observation reports that while there were still rooms for improvement in electoral governance, transparency and accountability, there was a steady improvement and trend as people in the MSG states freely participated in electing their government representatives.
