MADANG Governor Peter Yama has warned Waigani politicians against travelling to Madang to engage with administration and landowners in the Pacific Marine Industrial Zone project.

Mr Yama said yesterday he was still furious that while he was in Port Moresby to present the province’s 2019 budget to Treasurer Charles Abel, a political team from Port Moresby travelled to Madang to meet the administration and landowners over the PMIZ project.

“I am not going to name anyone, but I know certain politicians and ministers have been coming to Madang, especially when I am not around, and conducting meetings without my knowledge. It is disrespect for my office,” he said.

Mr Yama said he did not mind if the officers from the government travelled to Madang to conduct meetings but he took exception to the presence of politicians, especially ministers.

“Please stop it immediately; stay away from the Madang PMIZ,” he said.

“I am the governor. Have some respect for my office.

“I don’t want this to happen again.”

Mr Yama has written to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to facilitate the transfer of the PMIZ project to Madang, having set up the PMIZ project management unit.

“On behalf of the Madang people, I would like to thank you for your decision on January 25 this year to transfer the PMIZ project for its full implementation by the Madang provinical government,” Mr Yama said.
