Goroka brings colour to World TB day celebrations
THE World TB day was observed and celebrated in colours in Goroka, the capital of Eastern Highlands.
The celebrations involved health workers at the Goroka provincial hospital, students of the East Goroka primary school, the Eastern Highlands Provincial Health Authority (EHPHA) and its partners the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organisation.
EHPHA director for public health services Dr Max Manape when addressing a crowd of more than 2000 people at the National park said tuberculosis (TB) is not a disease that can be treated easily.
“Although TB is curable, it can be life threatening if not treated at a hospital or health centre,” Dr Manape said.
He said as the polio vaccination campaign is continuing in certain provinces, including the Eastern Highlands, the awareness campaign for the fight against TB should also be carried out in the province by everyone.
“Health is everybody’s business so we have to make it our business to do away with bad unhygienic habits that can be a health hazard and life threatening to us,” Dr Manape said.
He said the don’t care attitude is sending people to the hospitals and health centres in the province with various diseases, and TB is one of them.
Dr Manape appealed to the people of Goroka and the province to take extra care when buying and eating fast food from the main market and other street and roadside markets, because prevention is better than cure from all diseases including TB.
