The new Mendi market in its second year of operation has helped bolster small to medium enterprises.
Since the opening of the K5 million market, funded by the Southern Highlands provincial government, subsistence farmers and SMEs in the province have been able to use and sell their products.
Local businessman David Kelei said the market has paved the way for mothers and farmers to increase their supplies and sell at the new market.
“This has enabled local fastfood outlets to get fresh vegetables and supply the market with quantity and quality.
“It also serves people in Enga who travelled to Mendi to access services,” he said.
A long time second-hand clothes seller Dorothy Simon from Tente village near the town said the new market has really helped them to settle and sell their products in a better place.
“I am now very happy that finally we have been able to sell our products in a modern standard market.
“This is just similar to the Mt Hagen market and it really boosts our morale to continue do what we love doing,” she said.
“This market has helped us in many ways where we have been able to save some money to pay for our children school fees and buy food for the house.”
The opening of the Mendi Kandep and Mendi Tambul highway has opened the corridors for more economic activities to eventuate boosting the local economy to grow.
Mendi Urban Youth leader Colin Baco said the market has been a great boost for the local SMEs and it has also helped the local town council to collect some revenue which helps them to clean the market and town areas.
