Babysitter gets eight years for ‘fondling minor’

A 37-year-old man was sentenced to eight years for sexually abusing a seven-year-old child placed under his care as a “babysitter” at Gerehu stage 2 in Moresby Northwest.
The Waigani National Court heard that the offence was committed at the victim’s home.
The offender (named) pleaded guilty of using his fingers to sexually penetrate the victim while she was lying on the couch at her family home while her parents were away.
“A home is a place where security and safety is guaranteed,” Justice Mogish said.
“It would be the least expected location for a crime to be committed.”
The offender was employed as a babysitter.
He looked after the victim and her siblings and cleaned up the house while their parents were at work.
“Many families employ babysitters to look after their children while they go to work,” Justice Mogish said.
“They put a lot of faith and trust in their babysitters to ensure that their children are protected.
“This offender breached the trust put in him.”
The judge considered that it was not a worst case scenario and that the offender had pleaded guilty to the offence early in the investigations.
The offender’s admissions to police and his plea added weight to his expression of remorse.
A year was deducted from the head sentence from time spent in custody, with the remaining seven years to be served at Bomana jail.
