NEVER be defensive or objective about your contributions or stay silent in the face of misrepresentations there is no reward, resource companies were told.

Former Canadian minister for natural resources and finance, Joe Oliver, stated yesterday while presenting a case study from lessons Canada has learnt in the petroleum and energy sector.

Mr Oliver said it is important also to note that obtaining a so called social license is unattainable if it implies to everyone on the project site only because that license should be able to cater for the interest of everyone nationally.

He said some of these habits of staying quiet has brought about unnecessary problems that is why it is time to move forward even when vocal minority refuses the government’s or developers position and engages in civil disobedience.

“The industry can help by getting out the facts about its commitments, to environmental protection and or to jobs, economic growth and tax revenue from critical social programs,’’ he said.

“Never be defensive or objective about your contribution or stay silent in the face of misrepresentations there is no reward.

‘‘At the same time you should continue to recognise your economic obligation to the host country, safety on environment protection and hiring citizens and a fair share of the economic benefits resource development.”

Mr Oliver said being in Port Moresby, has reminded him so much on how PNG has beaten Canada to the LNG market despite being the world’s third largest proven oil reserves and the fourth largest production of natural gas.

“I offer you my congratulations with a hinge of regret that we have so far missed out,’’ he said.

“You got your act together well done, you’re and example. PNG is blessed with remarkable natural resources from its tropical beauty to its agriculture, mineral and petroleum wealth.

‘‘These natural endowments provide PNG potential to make significant progress in raising its GDP and standard of living for its culturally diverse citizens.”
