Vanimo city plan impractical
BY JEROME IKUAVI
PLANS to make Vanimo a city will not happen anytime soon as the Sandaun provincial government is more focused on developing infrastructure for the province and the districts.
West Sepik Governor Anthony Wouwou told the Post-Courier that Vanimo and West Sepik province are not ready for a city and will put aside the vision of developing Vanimo into a city.
Mr Wouwou said that the provincial government is focusing on infrastructure such as water sanitation, roads and an international airport and wharf.
“Once the necessary infrastructure has been put in place in each district, then we can be in a position to plan the city,” he said.
He said there is no money allocated for this plan as speculated in the province and on social media.
“There was no money allocated for that (city planning) and if it was, we would still use that money for other development purposes and service delivery,” Mr Wouwou said.
“We are focused on how the people will benefit.”
Mr Wouwou said another area is the economic zone for which Vanimo will become a transition hub.
