Lest we forget, independence the prize: Ex-combatant
BY PATRICK MAKIS
Bougainvilleans, especially ex-combatants, have been called on to remember what they fought for during the ten-year Bougainville Crisis over two decades ago.
“We must never forget what we fought for,” ex-combatant Paul Bikinu said.
“We owe it to the memory of those people who died during the crisis and the struggles we endured to be where we are today.
“We must not allow ourselves to be drawn away from achieving what we fought for.”
He said with the referendum fast approaching, Bougainvilleans should be united and all of voting age should participate and vote for independence.
Mr Bikinu said with the surrendering of weapons now complete at Orami, the onus was on the chiefs and community government leaders to lead the people.
“The war is over and wehave surrendered our weapons,” he said.
“This means that we have relegated the leadership powers back to our traditional chiefs and it is their responsibility to lead us.”
