Overflowing with colour and life, the Asia-Pacific Triennial (APT9) Art Exhibition presents a unique mix of creativity and cross-cultural insight.
The exhibition, which was held over the weekend, featured more than 80 artists and groups from over 30 countries.
The triennial event promotes and challenges conventional definitions of contemporary art and its relationship to shifting social structures across the region.
Artwork on display included paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos by indigenous artists.
Several collections and pieces of art by Bougainvillea artists Gregory Dausi Moah (1911-1988), Herman Somuk (1901-1965) were also on display, including images of the (Bougainville) crisis.
Mr Moah was a self-taught artist who was inspired by his traditional elders and fostered by the nuns and priests of Gagan mission.
He built an innovative Tsuhana (sacred house) decorated with paintings and carvings immortalising significant ancestor figures and clan stories.
Mr Somuk, on the other hand, was one of Bougainville’s pioneering artists.
Many of his drawings are held in collections throughout Europe and document stories, customs and life in Bougainville between the wars, and also engage Christian themes.
