MILNE Bay provincial government has committed more than K2.5 million to fund special police operations to combat law and order problems in the province.

This follows a recommendation by the provincial law and order committee (PLOC) at its first full meeting for 2019 at the Media Centre on January 25.

The total commitment is K2,574,000, which will come from funds allocated for the PSIP and the four DSIPs for Alotau, Esa’ala, Kiriwina-Goodenough and Samarai-Murua, as well as contributions from the national government.

Governor Sir John Luke Crittin has committed K1 million. Alotau district has already paid two cheques for a total K540,000 and the national government has given K430,000.

The four districts have committed K200,000 each and Kiriwina-Goodenough district development authority paid their first K150,000 contribution yesterday.

Kiriwina-Goodenough acting district administrator Robert Makai presented the cheque to the deputy chairman of PLOC and acting provincial administrator Michael Kape on behalf of Governor Sir John, his deputy Tom Cameron and committee chairman Pastor Peter Boena.

Provincial police station commander, Insp Andrew Waeda, represented provincial police commander Chief Insp Michael Tilai at the small presentation ceremony at the office of the Member for Kiriwina-Goodenough.

Mr Kape thanked Deputy Prime Minister Charles Abel (MP, Alotau), Minister for Justice and Attorney-General Davis Steven (Esa’ala), Minister for Forest Douglas Tomuriesa (Kiriwina-Goodenough) and Samarai-Murua MP Isi Henry Leonard for their support.

“Special police operations anywhere in the country are very expensive. The operations in Milne Bay will be conducted not only in Alotau but throughout the province in Esa’ala, Goodenough, Trobriands and Misima and we need funding for the four districts,” Mr Kape said.

“Our national leaders have met with the provincial law and order committee to find out how they could help. They made a commitment to fund the special police operations and we are now seeing the results of their commitment.”

More than K2 million has already been spent on vehicles, fuel, accommodation, rations and allowances for members of the Police Air Tactical Unit who were deployed on January 25 and have been conducting their operations for the last six weeks.

“The police have done an excellent job and we can see the results. Alotau is safe and secure, business has returned to normal and people are moving around freely,” Mr Kape said.
