Mirisim calls for increase, monitoring of DSIP funds
TELEFOMIN MP Solan Mirisim has recommended an increase from K10 million to K20m of district services improvement program (DSIP) funding for remote electorates.
Mr Mirisim, who is defence minister, had also called on the department of implementation and rural development go to each district to monitor and report projects and programs implemented by individual MPs.
He said MPs can come up and present their reports in projects, but it could be ‘ghost projects’ and so it is important to monitor and check against the acquittal reports of K10m per year.
Mr Misirim made the call when presenting Telefomin district acquittals for the years 2016, 2017 and 2018 to acting secretary Aihi Vaki last Friday.
“I would urge the office of rural development to go down to the district to see for themselves the implementation of the DSIP.
“You need to be there and present the reports and tell the country which district is delivering and which district is not delivering and once you do that, you motivate MPs and those who do not will start implementing
“It is easy for some districts to implement services, while it is difficult for others.
“That is why I recommend equalisation funds in terms of subsidised costs.
“Districts that are only accessible by plane may need to have their DSIP increased from K10m to at least K15m or K20m.
“Districts that have easy access should have their funding reduced and given to districts that find it difficult to deliver so that people can see tangible change.”
