A PREGNANT woman was airlifted from Tanga Island, Namatanai, New Ireland Province, to Vunapope General Hospital in Kokopo on Sunday afternoon.

The patient who had complications delivering her first baby, was in the labour ward for the whole day, but failed to progress as the baby was not in the right position for delivery.

Vunapope Hospital director medical services Dr Felix Diaku said the patient was flown in by Manolos Aviation helicopter and was attended too immediately.

Dr Diaku further said she gave birth two hours later.

He said medevac operations in New Ireland, West New Britain and remote areas of East New Britain province like Pomio, especially very remote areas had been effective through the help of Manolos Aviation and New Guinea Helicopters.

“Medevac is a very essential service where relevant authorities must look into and take immediate solutions for a way forward to address the short term problem, while we are planning long term solutions.”

Manolos Aviation has been providing medevac services in PNG for more than 10 years through a joint provincial government project aimed at evacuating women in need of urgent medical attention due to pregnancy complications and other health emergencies.

Manolos Aviation manager Jurgen Ruh said in May last year he signed a contract with the Namatanai district administration, where funds have been allocated for medevac emergency services.

He said his health team received a call about 12.30pm on Sunday and alerted a helicopter to rescue the mother in Namatanai.
